“I don’t want to bother you, but you’re bleeding. Are you okay?”

“Yes, you didn’t know your shoulder is bleeding?

“No, I didn’t see it. Oh, but now I do. No wonder my arm is aching.”

“Well, yes, it must be quite a wound. There’s actually a lot of blood. Do you know what happened?”

“I…I’m not sure. There was so much going on. People running everywhere. Gunfire…and people falling. I was walking my dog. Where is my dog?”

“You must have been hit, I think. I’ve called an ambulance. And let me see if I can see your dog. What does your dog look like?”

“Was I shot? Is that what happened? My dog…he’s a fox terrier. He’s old and hard of hearing. He will be very frightened.”

“What’s his name?”

“George…his name is George. Oh, I knew I shouldn’t have left the house, but I did not realize things were so bad.”

“Yes, it has really got out of hand. Too many people and too many guns. No-one knows who the enemy is any more.”

“What were you doing out on the street?”
“I heard the shots and came running…”

“Are you my enemy?”

“I don’t know, but I don’t hate you and you are bleeding.”
